US-Iran Talks in Islamabad End Without Agreement After 21 Hours of Negotiations

High-stakes diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran concluded without a breakthrough in Islamabad on Sunday, after more than 21 hours of intensive negotiations failed to produce an agreement on Tehran's nuclear program, US Vice President JD Vance announced.

Vance said the United States had presented what it described as its "final and best" proposal to Iranian negotiators, but acknowledged that no consensus had been reached on the central question of Iran's intentions regarding nuclear weapons development. Washington is seeking a firm commitment from Tehran to permanently abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons capability.

The collapse of the Islamabad talks marks a significant setback for diplomatic efforts to resolve the years-long standoff over Iran's nuclear activities. The negotiations, which stretched through the night and into Sunday morning, were hosted by Pakistani officials and represented one of the most prolonged direct engagements between senior American and Iranian delegations in recent years.

Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is entirely civilian in nature and intended for energy production, rejecting Western allegations that it is pursuing weapons capability. Tehran has also demanded the lifting of crippling economic sanctions as a precondition for any meaningful agreement, a position that has repeatedly clashed with Washington's sequencing demands.

The talks come at a period of heightened regional tension, with Gulf states closely monitoring any development that could alter the strategic balance in the Middle East. Qatar, which has long served as a diplomatic hub and has maintained open channels with both Tehran and Washington, will be watching the failure of the Islamabad round with deep concern. Doha has previously facilitated indirect communications between the two sides and has a direct interest in regional stability given its geographic proximity to Iran across the Gulf, as well as the shared gas field that binds the two nations economically.

The absence of a deal raises fresh questions about the path forward. US officials have signaled that their patience is not unlimited, with further diplomatic options under consideration including tightened sanctions pressure and increased consultations with allies in the region.

Iranian Foreign Ministry representatives had not issued an immediate detailed response to Vance's announcement at the time of publication, though officials in Tehran had entered the talks with stated expectations of a respectful dialogue conducted on their own terms.

Regional observers noted that Pakistan's role as host underscored the shifting geometry of Middle Eastern diplomacy, with non-Arab Muslim-majority states increasingly playing facilitating roles in sensitive negotiations. Both delegations were expected to return to their respective capitals for consultations before indicating whether any further rounds of talks remain possible.
