Volunteers Establish Free School in Gaza's Jabalia Camp Amid Educational Crisis
Volunteer teachers in Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp have launched a free school serving 150 students amid the collapse of the territory's educational system under nearly eighteen months of Israeli military operations and a tightening blockade that has left hundreds of thousands of children without access to formal schooling.
The school, named "Mada" — Arabic for "range" or "extent" — operates under conditions that underscore the severity of the humanitarian crisis. Students from the first through ninth grades sit on rubble and broken concrete, using debris as makeshift desks, as teachers draw on whatever materials remain available to deliver lessons to children who have known little but war and displacement since October 2023.
Gaza's educational infrastructure has been decimated by the conflict. United Nations agencies have reported that the vast majority of schools across the territory have been damaged or destroyed, with more than 625,000 students displaced from any form of structured learning. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has described the situation as one of the most severe educational emergencies in the world, warning of a "lost generation" if sustained intervention does not reach Palestinian children.
The Mada initiative reflects a pattern of grassroots resilience emerging across Gaza, where community members, educators, and aid workers have attempted to fill the vacuum left by the destruction of state institutions. Similar informal learning spaces have appeared in tent camps and partially standing buildings throughout northern Gaza, though access to supplies, qualified teachers, and safe structures remains critically constrained by the ongoing blockade.
Qatar, through its governmental and charitable institutions including the Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Charity, has remained among the most active international donors to Palestinian education and humanitarian relief. Doha has repeatedly called at the United Nations and through diplomatic channels for immediate humanitarian access to Gaza, including the restoration of educational services, arguing that denying children schooling constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
The Gulf state hosts the political bureau of Hamas and has served as a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations, with Qatari officials pressing for terms that would allow sustained humanitarian operations, including the rebuilding of civilian infrastructure. Educators and child welfare advocates have urged that any future agreement prioritise the restoration of schools as a foundation for any meaningful recovery.
For the children of Jabalia, sitting in the open air among the ruins of what was once one of the most densely populated urban areas on earth, Mada represents something more immediate: a daily routine, a teacher's voice, and a fragile continuity with a life that existed before the bombs fell.
