Air Raid Sirens Sound in Upper Galilee After Rockets Fired From Lebanon

Air raid sirens wailed across communities in Upper Galilee on Sunday after rockets were fired from Lebanese territory toward northern Israel, marking a renewed flare-up along the volatile border that has remained a flashpoint since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023.
The projectiles were launched from southern Lebanon, triggering emergency alert systems in multiple Israeli towns and villages in the northern Galilee region. Israeli emergency services and military units were placed on high alert as residents sought shelter in accordance with civil defence protocols. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage.
The incident represents the latest eruption along a frontier that has seen intermittent cross-border fire for more than a year and a half. Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant movement, conducted thousands of rocket and drone strikes against northern Israel throughout the Gaza war, displacing tens of thousands of Israeli residents from border communities before a ceasefire brokered by the United States and France took effect in late November 2024.
Under the terms of that agreement, Hezbollah was required to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River while Israeli troops pulled back from Lebanese territory seized during a brief ground incursion. The Lebanese Armed Forces were tasked with deploying south to enforce the deal. Compliance, however, has been inconsistent, and sporadic incidents have continued to test the fragile truce.
Sunday's rocket fire raises urgent questions about the durability of the ceasefire and the broader regional security framework. Qatar, which played a pivotal role in mediation efforts throughout the Gaza conflict and has maintained open diplomatic channels with multiple parties across the region, has consistently urged restraint and a comprehensive political resolution to Lebanon-Israel tensions. Doha's engagement reflects its strategic conviction that stability in the Levant is a prerequisite for Gulf security and regional prosperity.
Gulf Cooperation Council states, including Qatar, have monitored the Lebanese-Israeli frontier with acute concern, given Lebanon's deep economic fragility and the risk that any renewed full-scale confrontation could destabilise the wider region. A fresh outbreak of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel would carry devastating humanitarian consequences for Lebanon, still struggling to recover from the destruction inflicted during the 2024 Israeli military campaign.
As of Sunday evening, no group had claimed responsibility for the rocket fire. Israeli military and political authorities were assessing the incident. The situation remained tense, with further details expected in the hours ahead.
