A fire broke out in Saudi Arabia's Jubail Industrial City on Tuesday after the kingdom's air defenses intercepted seven ballistic missiles targeting the Eastern Province, raising urgent concerns about the vulnerability of one of the world's most strategically critical industrial zones.

Saudi air defense systems destroyed all seven missiles before they reached their targets, according to initial reports citing Saudi civil defense authorities. However, falling debris ignited a fire within the sprawling Jubail complex, which hosts some of the largest petrochemical and energy infrastructure on the planet, including facilities operated by Saudi Aramco and the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, known as SABIC.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though the trajectory and scale of the strike bore the hallmarks of previous Houthi missile campaigns launched from Yemen, which have repeatedly targeted Saudi industrial and energy infrastructure over the course of the Yemen conflict. The Houthi movement has in recent months intensified its long-range strikes amid renewed hostilities across the region.

Jubail Industrial City, located on the Arabian Gulf coast roughly 95 kilometres north of Dammam, is the largest industrial city in the world by area and accounts for a significant share of global petrochemical output. Damage to its facilities would carry immediate consequences for international energy markets, supply chains for plastics and chemicals, and Saudi Arabia's national revenue, given Aramco's central role in the kingdom's economy.

The incident underscores the persistent security vulnerabilities facing Gulf Cooperation Council states as regional tensions remain elevated. Qatar, which maintains robust air defense cooperation with its GCC partners and hosts the forward headquarters of United States Central Command at Al Udeid Air Base, has consistently called for diplomatic solutions to end the Yemen conflict and reduce the threat of spillover to civilian and industrial infrastructure across the Gulf.

Images circulating on social media showed plumes of black smoke rising over the industrial zone, though the full extent of the fire and any structural damage to facilities had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting. Saudi civil defense teams were deployed to the scene.

The attack comes at a moment of heightened regional volatility, with ongoing conflict in Gaza, contested maritime security in the Red Sea, and unresolved political tensions between Gulf states and Iran continuing to shape the security environment. Analysts have warned that critical infrastructure across the Arabian Peninsula remains exposed to asymmetric missile and drone threats despite significant investments in air defense systems by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
