Hezbollah Denies Syrian Interior Ministry Claims of Assassination Plot Link

Hezbollah on Sunday flatly denied allegations made by Syria's Interior Ministry linking the Lebanese militant group to a cell accused of plotting to assassinate a prominent religious figure, declaring that the organization maintains no operational presence or activities anywhere inside Syrian territory.

The denial came in response to a statement issued by Damascus in which Syrian security authorities claimed to have dismantled a network connected to Hezbollah that had been planning the targeted killing of an unidentified religious personality. Syrian officials presented the alleged cell as evidence of continued interference by the Iran-backed group in Syrian internal affairs despite the political changes that have swept the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government.

In a firm rebuttal, Hezbollah said the Syrian ministry's claims were entirely baseless and rejected what it described as a deliberate attempt to implicate the group in activities it had no knowledge of or connection to. The party insisted it had withdrawn from Syria and that assertions of any ongoing footprint on Syrian soil were false.

The exchange marks the latest episode of tension between Hezbollah and the new Syrian administration, which has taken a markedly different posture toward the Lebanese group than the Assad government that long relied on Hezbollah fighters to defend its rule during the country's civil war. Since Assad's ouster in December 2024, Syrian authorities under the transitional government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa have moved to distance the country from Hezbollah and its patron Iran.

The assassination plot allegation carries particular sensitivity given the sectarian dimensions that have historically complicated relations between Sunni-majority Syria and Shia-linked armed factions. Syrian authorities did not publicly name the religious figure said to have been targeted, nor did they provide detailed evidence to support the claimed cell's ties to Hezbollah.

Regional analysts monitoring post-Assad Syria note that such accusations serve a dual political purpose for Damascus — consolidating domestic legitimacy by confronting perceived Iranian proxies while signaling to Gulf states and Western partners that the new government is committed to breaking with the past. Qatar and other Gulf Cooperation Council members, which have engaged diplomatically with Syria's transitional authorities, have consistently called for Syrian sovereignty to be respected and for the country to be freed from foreign militia influence. The Doha-based diplomatic track remains attentive to developments that could destabilize the fragile Syrian transition and reignite cross-border tensions involving non-state actors.
