Hezbollah Fires Around 40 Rockets Towards Northern Towns

Hezbollah launched approximately 40 rockets toward towns in northern Israel within a single hour on Tuesday, according to Israel's Channel 13, marking one of the most intense barrages from the Lebanese group in recent weeks and raising fears of a broader escalation along the volatile border.

The rockets targeted multiple communities in the Galilee region and the upper Jordan Valley, sending residents scrambling for bomb shelters as air raid sirens wailed across the northern districts. Israeli military officials confirmed that the Iron Dome air defense system intercepted a number of the projectiles, though several impacts were reported in open areas. Initial reports indicated no fatalities, though emergency services were dispatched to assess damage and treat minor injuries from shrapnel and falling debris.

The Israeli Defense Forces said they were investigating the source of the launches and warned of a forceful response. Military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the army was prepared to act decisively to protect Israeli civilians, without specifying what form retaliation might take. The barrage came amid heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, where cross-border exchanges of fire have persisted for months in what many analysts describe as a shadow war linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Hezbollah has framed its attacks as acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel's military campaign has killed tens of thousands since October 2023. The group has repeatedly stated that its operations along the northern front will continue as long as Israeli operations persist in the besieged enclave. Israeli officials have in turn threatened to launch a full-scale military operation in southern Lebanon if Hezbollah does not cease fire and withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, as stipulated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

The escalation has drawn concern from regional and international actors. Qatar, which has played a central role in mediation efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, has warned that the widening of hostilities to include Lebanon could destabilize the entire region. Doha has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and has urged the international community to press for an immediate cessation of hostilities across all fronts.

United Nations peacekeepers deployed in southern Lebanon under the UNIFIL mandate reported increased military activity on both sides of the Blue Line, the demarcation separating the two countries. The peacekeeping force called for an immediate de-escalation and urged both Israel and Hezbollah to respect the cessation of hostilities framework.

Lebanon's caretaker government condemned what it described as Israeli provocations that have drawn the country into a conflict it did not seek. The ongoing exchanges have displaced tens of thousands of residents on both sides of the border, compounding a humanitarian crisis in a region already strained by years of political and economic instability.
