Iraqi Warns of Radiation Leak Risk Near Bushehr Nuclear Plant
Iraq has formally warned the United Nations of the risk of a radiation leak following what officials described as a fourth attack in the vicinity of Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, raising alarm across the Gulf region over the potential for a nuclear catastrophe with far-reaching consequences.
The Iraqi government transmitted its warning directly to the United Nations, urging international action to prevent further strikes near the facility, which sits on the eastern shore of the Persian Gulf approximately 17 kilometres southeast of the city of Bushehr. The plant, which houses two operational VVER-1000 reactors, is the only commercial nuclear power station in Iran and produces roughly 1,000 megawatts of electricity for the national grid.
Officials in Baghdad expressed deep concern that continued military activity in the area could compromise the structural integrity of the plant or its cooling systems, potentially triggering a radioactive release that would drift across Gulf waters and into neighboring countries. Iraq shares a long border with Iran and its southern provinces lie within the potential fallout zone of any major incident at Bushehr.
The warning comes as regional tensions remain elevated following a period of strikes attributed to Israeli military operations targeting Iranian infrastructure. Iran has not officially confirmed the attacks on or near Bushehr, but satellite imagery and independent monitoring organizations have reported activity in the area consistent with precision strikes.
Gulf states, including Qatar, have been closely monitoring the situation given the proximity of Bushehr to their coastlines and the shared waters of the Arabian Gulf. A significant radiation release from the plant would pose an existential threat to desalination infrastructure that Gulf nations depend on for their freshwater supply, as well as marine ecosystems and the health of millions of residents.
Qatar, which borders the Gulf directly opposite Iran, has in recent years maintained a policy of diplomatic engagement with Tehran while reaffirming its commitment to regional stability. Doha has consistently called for de-escalation in the Gulf and supports the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been notified and is expected to dispatch inspectors to assess conditions at the site. No radiation anomalies have been publicly confirmed as of the time of reporting, but Iraq's decision to formally engage the UN Security Council underscores the gravity with which regional governments are treating the threat.
