Islamic Resistance in Iraq Launches Drones Toward Occupation Bases
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq launched a new wave of drone strikes targeting what the group described as occupation bases in the region, releasing footage Monday showing unmanned aerial vehicles being deployed in coordinated operations against foreign military installations.
The strikes mark the latest escalation by Iraqi resistance factions, which have significantly intensified operations since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is an umbrella grouping of Iran-aligned factions including Kataib Hezbollah and other Shia militia organizations that have long demanded the withdrawal of United States and allied forces from Iraqi soil.
The group released video documentation of the drone launches, a practice that has become standard in its communications strategy as factions seek to demonstrate operational capability and reach to both domestic and regional audiences. The footage showed multiple unmanned aerial vehicles being prepared and launched from undisclosed locations.
Iraqi resistance factions have carried out hundreds of drone and rocket attacks against US military positions in Iraq and Syria since the Gaza conflict began, framing their operations as part of a broader regional axis of resistance that includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Palestinian armed groups. The attacks have drawn retaliatory US airstrikes on militia positions inside Iraq, creating recurring cycles of escalation that have tested the government in Baghdad.
The Iraqi government, which maintains a delicate balance between its treaty obligations to Washington and its deep political ties to Tehran, has repeatedly called for restraint from all sides while simultaneously hosting negotiations aimed at establishing a timetable for the withdrawal of the US-led international coalition. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has pursued a dual-track diplomacy that seeks to preserve Iraqi sovereignty while avoiding direct confrontation with either the United States or the resistance factions that hold significant political weight in parliament.
For Qatar and the broader Gulf states, the continued drone campaign represents a persistent source of regional instability that complicates diplomatic and economic calculations. Doha, which hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, has consistently advocated for de-escalation through dialogue, with Qatari officials emphasizing that sustained regional conflict undermines the diplomatic track necessary to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and address the underlying political grievances driving armed mobilization across the region.
