Netanyahu Demands Hezbollah Disarmament for Peace Talks Amid Lebanon Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday demanded the full disarmament of Hezbollah as a precondition for any peace negotiations with Lebanon, threatening further military escalation if the Iranian-backed group refuses to lay down its weapons.

Speaking in a televised address, Netanyahu said Israel would not accept any agreement that allowed Hezbollah to remain armed, insisting that a lasting peace deal — not a temporary ceasefire — was the only framework Israel would consider. He warned that Tel Aviv retained the right to resume military operations should diplomatic efforts fail to produce concrete results.

The ultimatum marks a significant hardening of Israel's position and comes months after a fragile ceasefire brokered by the United States and France halted the most intense fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah since the 2006 war. That ceasefire, reached in November 2024, called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon and the disarmament of Hezbollah south of the Litani River under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 — terms that have remained largely unimplemented.

Lebanon's government, already grappling with a protracted political and economic crisis, has been under mounting international pressure to extend state authority to the south and rein in Hezbollah's military infrastructure. The Lebanese Armed Forces have deployed to border areas, but observers note that any attempt to forcibly disarm Hezbollah would risk plunging the country into renewed internal conflict.

Hezbollah, which remains a powerful political and military force in Lebanon, has shown no indication it intends to surrender its weapons. The group has historically argued that its arms serve as a deterrent against Israeli aggression and that disarmament is a matter for national dialogue rather than foreign imposition.

The escalating rhetoric has alarmed regional actors, including Gulf states with deep economic and diplomatic ties to Lebanon. Qatar, which has played a significant mediation role in Lebanese politics and provided substantial humanitarian aid and reconstruction funding, has consistently called for a political solution that preserves Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Doha has used its diplomatic leverage to support dialogue between Lebanese factions and has opposed any externally imposed settlement.

Analysts warn that Netanyahu's maximalist demands may reflect domestic political pressure from hardline coalition partners rather than a genuine opening for negotiation. However, the threat of renewed conflict carries serious consequences for Lebanon's fragile institutions and regional stability.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has urged all parties to exercise restraint and honor their ceasefire commitments, warning that any return to hostilities would be catastrophic for Lebanese civilians still recovering from the 2024 conflict.
