WHO Chief Warns About Safety of Iran's Nuclear Facilities

The head of the World Health Organization has issued an urgent warning over the potential humanitarian consequences of military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, cautioning that any attack could trigger a radiological catastrophe with consequences extending far beyond Iran's borders.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus raised the alarm as diplomatic tensions between Washington, Tel Aviv, and Tehran continue to escalate, with both the United States and Israel having publicly refused to rule out military action against Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Tedros stressed that nuclear facilities, regardless of their stated purpose, must never become targets in any military conflict.

Iran operates several major nuclear sites, including the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and the underground complex at Fordow, as well as the Bushehr nuclear power plant on the Persian Gulf coast. A strike on any of these facilities, experts warn, could release radioactive material into the atmosphere, contaminating water sources, agricultural land, and populated areas across the wider Middle East and potentially beyond.

The WHO chief's warning comes amid a fragile moment in negotiations. The United States and Iran have been engaged in indirect talks mediated by Oman in a bid to revive a nuclear agreement, but those discussions remain unresolved. President Trump has simultaneously signalled openness to diplomacy while threatening to impose maximum economic pressure and not ruling out military options if talks fail.

For Gulf states, the spectre of a strike on Iranian nuclear infrastructure poses existential concerns. Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait all lie within potential fallout zones depending on wind patterns following any radiological release at Bushehr, which sits just 250 kilometres from the Qatari coast. The potential for environmental contamination of Gulf waters would threaten desalination plants that supply drinking water across the region.

Qatar has consistently advocated for diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear question, with Doha's Foreign Ministry repeatedly calling for dialogue and warning against any military escalation in the Gulf. The country hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, placing it at the centre of any regional military calculus.

The WHO's intervention marks a rare direct warning from a global health body over an active geopolitical standoff, underscoring the extent to which international institutions now view a potential strike on Iran's nuclear sites as a public health emergency in waiting. Tedros urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic channels to resolve the crisis, warning that the consequences of miscalculation would be irreversible.
