Iran Informs Mediators That US Troop Reinforcements Raise Doubts on Trump's Dialogue Proposal

Iran has conveyed to international mediators that the recent deployment of additional American military forces to the Middle East has deepened its skepticism toward President Donald Trump's proposal for direct dialogue, viewing the troop buildup as fundamentally incompatible with genuine diplomatic engagement.
Senior Iranian officials communicated the message through intermediaries in recent days, according to regional diplomatic sources, signaling that Tehran interprets the reinforcements as a pressure tactic rather than a confidence-building measure. The Iranian side reportedly told mediators that Washington cannot simultaneously escalate its military posture in the region and expect Tehran to approach negotiations in good faith.
The United States has steadily increased its military footprint across the Gulf and broader Middle East in recent weeks, deploying additional naval assets, fighter squadrons, and support personnel to bases in the region. The Pentagon has described the movements as defensive and precautionary, but Iranian leaders have drawn a sharply different conclusion, characterizing the buildup as preparation for potential offensive action.
Trump had extended what he described as an open invitation for dialogue with Tehran, framing the offer as an opportunity to resolve longstanding disputes over Iran's nuclear program, regional influence, and ballistic missile capabilities. The proposal was met with cautious interest from some quarters in Tehran, but the concurrent military escalation has eroded whatever goodwill the overture may have generated.
The development places Gulf states, particularly Qatar, in a delicate diplomatic position. Doha has long maintained open channels of communication with both Washington and Tehran, and has repeatedly emphasized that regional stability is best served through dialogue rather than confrontation. Qatar's Foreign Ministry has consistently advocated for de-escalation and has offered its good offices to facilitate diplomatic engagement between the parties.
Regional analysts noted that the Iranian message to mediators reflects a broader pattern in which military posturing by external powers complicates diplomatic efforts in the Gulf. The buildup has raised concerns among Gulf Cooperation Council member states about the potential for miscalculation or unintended escalation in one of the world's most strategically vital waterways.
Diplomatic sources familiar with the mediation efforts said that several regional capitals are working behind the scenes to preserve space for negotiations, urging both sides to take steps that would lower tensions and create conditions conducive to talks. Qatar, Oman, and other regional actors with established relationships with Tehran are understood to be playing active roles in these efforts.
The situation remains fluid, with no indication that either Washington or Tehran is prepared to make the first concession. Observers warn that without a meaningful gesture of de-escalation from one side, the window for diplomacy could narrow further, increasing the risk of a confrontation that neither party publicly claims to seek.
