Iran issued a stark warning to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, cautioning Abu Dhabi against any aggression toward the disputed islands of Abu Musa and Greater Tunb in the Arabian Gulf, with a senior military spokesman declaring that Iranian armed forces would strike the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah directly in the event of any hostile action.

The spokesman for Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters delivered the pointed threat in remarks carried by Iranian state media, signaling a sharp escalation in rhetoric over the long-contested islands that have been a source of friction between Tehran and the UAE for more than five decades. The islands, situated at the strategic mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, have been under Iranian control since 1971, when Iranian forces occupied them just days before the UAE formally gained independence from Britain.

The warning represents a notable departure from the measured diplomatic tone that has characterized Gulf relations in recent years, particularly following a period of rapprochement between Iran and several Arab states. The explicit naming of Ras Al Khaimah, the emirate with the strongest historical claim to the islands, adds a layer of specificity that regional analysts say is designed to deter any military or diplomatic moves to alter the status quo.

The UAE has long maintained that the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb are integral parts of its sovereign territory, a position supported by the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Successive Emirati governments have called for the dispute to be resolved through direct negotiations or referral to the International Court of Justice, a proposal Tehran has consistently rejected.

The escalation comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the wider Gulf region, which continues to navigate the fallout from multiple overlapping conflicts and shifting alliances. Qatar, which shares the world's largest natural gas field with Iran, has historically advocated for dialogue and diplomatic solutions to regional disputes, maintaining balanced relations with both Tehran and its Gulf neighbors.

Doha has repeatedly emphasized the importance of de-escalation and the resolution of territorial disputes through internationally recognized legal mechanisms, a position that has earned it a role as a trusted mediator in regional affairs. Qatari officials have not yet publicly commented on the latest Iranian statements, though diplomatic sources suggest that Doha is closely monitoring the situation.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes daily, remains one of the most strategically significant waterways on the planet. Any military confrontation in its vicinity would carry severe consequences for global energy markets and international shipping, a reality that has historically served as a deterrent against open conflict in the area.

Regional observers note that while such warnings from Iranian military officials are not unprecedented, the directness of the latest statement suggests a hardening of Tehran's position at a time when Gulf security dynamics remain in flux.
