Global Interest in Nuclear Power Grows Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

Rising tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear programme are driving a renewed and accelerating global interest in civilian nuclear energy, as governments across the world seek greater energy independence and long-term strategic security, analysts and officials say.

The standoff between Western powers and Tehran over Iran's uranium enrichment activities has sharpened focus on nuclear technology not only as a weapon of geopolitical leverage, but increasingly as a pillar of national energy strategy. Countries ranging from emerging economies to established powers are fast-tracking nuclear energy programmes, citing both the need for reliable baseload power and the desire to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports amid volatile global markets.

Russia and China have positioned themselves as the primary exporters of civilian nuclear technology, signing agreements with dozens of nations across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Moscow's state nuclear corporation Rosatom currently has projects under construction or in advanced planning in more than twenty countries, while Beijing's state-backed nuclear firms have expanded aggressively into markets that Western vendors have been slow to enter. North Korea, though isolated, has accelerated its own nuclear weapons programme in parallel, adding further pressure to the global non-proliferation framework.

For the Gulf region, the dynamics carry particular weight. The United Arab Emirates brought its Barakah nuclear plant — the Arab world's first operational civilian nuclear facility — to full four-reactor capacity last year, a milestone watched closely by neighbouring states. Saudi Arabia has publicly stated ambitions for at least two nuclear reactors and has declined to rule out domestic uranium enrichment, a position that has drawn attention from Washington and complicated ongoing negotiations over a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

Qatar, while it has not pursued a nuclear energy programme, has a direct strategic stake in the broader regional calculus. As the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, Doha's energy influence is shaped in part by how quickly and how widely nuclear alternatives are adopted globally. A rapid nuclear buildout among major economies could over time affect long-range LNG demand projections, even as near-term gas markets remain tight.

Diplomatic sources note that Qatar has consistently backed multilateral frameworks for nuclear non-proliferation, including full International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards, and has urged dialogue to resolve the Iranian nuclear file through negotiation rather than confrontation. Qatari officials have previously served as informal communication channels between Western governments and Tehran, underlining Doha's role as a regional stabiliser.

The broader surge in nuclear interest also reflects mounting pressure on governments to meet climate commitments, with nuclear energy increasingly cited by the International Energy Agency and others as an essential low-carbon source needed to complement intermittent renewables. Whether that ambition can be realised without exacerbating proliferation risks remains the central tension animating policymakers from Washington to Beijing.
